The imprint

About.

Who runs Nathan James Publishing, what we believe about the business of books, and how to find the right mailbox for the right conversation.

Why this exists

A publisher for the middle.

Modern publishing has two doors and nothing between them.

One door is Big Five publishing. You need an agent to knock on it. The agent needs a proposal. The proposal needs a comparable-titles chart. If you make it in, they take world rights and hand you eight percent. If your book doesn’t break out inside the first six weeks, they stop marketing and move on. The door is real, but it’s narrow, and the terms are hidden until the last conversation.

The other door is vanity publishing. You pay them — often five figures. They put a cover on your manuscript. Sometimes they take some of your rights, too. The door is wide open, but you walk through it lighter and no closer to actually being read.

Nathan James Publishing exists for the middle. The writer who has something real to say and no interest in either door. We treat every author as a partner: we invest in the whole back end of being published, and we split what the book earns. No advances. No fees. No rights grab. No hidden terms.

Under one roof

Four imprints.

Nathan James Publishing houses four imprints, each aimed at a different reader. Same voice underneath. Same standard for what makes it to print.

C.U.L.T. Kids

The Book of You — Children’s Editions. Twenty titles across two age bands (5–10 and 8–12), plus the Little Nathan trilogy. Also available in Spanish as El Libro de Ti.

C.U.L.T. Teens

Young Nathan trilogy. The bridge years. Written for teens who see through the performance and want the honest version.

C.U.L.T. Adult

Truth Not The Truth. The Nathan trilogy. Philosophy, memoir, and the frameworks a working adult wishes someone had handed them earlier.

Audiobiography

The Nathan Trilogy — nine books across three tiers. A life told from the inside, one honest chapter at a time. Little Nathan · Young Nathan · Nathan.

The house author

Nathan James

the pen name of Nathaniel Barnes

Nathan James writes for the reader he wishes had found the book at the exact right moment. Not to spare them the fight, but to name the fight while it’s happening.

He is the founder of C.U.L.T. — Cultivating Underdeveloped Leaders Today — a learning platform for kids, teens, and adults built around the idea that the systems you inherited aren’t you. The Book of You is the philosophical spine of that platform, made portable.

He lives in South Carolina and records music under his own name at Nathan James Productions. Nathan James Publishing is the third pillar of a family-held creative ecosystem — music, learning, and now books — all built to reach whoever is ready to hear them.

The owner

Nyasia Monet Barnes.

Sole Member · Managing Owner · Publisher

Nyasia Barnes

Founder-owner of Nathan James Publishing LLC

Nyasia is the managing owner of Nathan James Publishing LLC. The company is registered under her name, holds its EIN under her ownership, and operates every account, agreement, and financial channel under her signature. When an author signs a partnership with Nathan James Publishing, they are signing with a company that is legally, structurally, and beneficially hers.

This structure is intentional. Nathan James Publishing is the third pillar of a family-held creative ecosystem — alongside a music arm and a learning platform — and each pillar is built as a legacy vehicle for the generation it’s meant to serve. The publishing arm is Nyasia’s. What she inherits, she operates.

In practice, Nyasia oversees the legal, business, and imprint-level operations of the company: partnership agreements, author correspondence, financial and tax administration, and the ongoing integrity of the transparency commitments (the public contract, the public ledger, the rate card) that define how the imprint does business. She sets and updates the roster status. Every quarterly Ledger update carries her sign-off.

Nyasia’s approach to the business is deliberate and quiet. She reads every agreement. She reads every author query. She corresponds directly with author-partners as they come into the roster. Her contact address, nyasia@nathanjamespublishing.com, is the one to write for anything that needs the owner rather than the imprint’s general mailbox.

The philosophy she’s built the company around: an author’s book is the author’s book. Our job is to build the business that carries it into the world without taking it from them.

The company

Nathan James Publishing LLC.

Nathan James Publishing is a family-held independent publisher, owned and operated by Nyasia Barnes, structured to be a fair, transparent partner to every author who signs with it.

The imprint uses Nathan James as its author-facing publishing name, honoring the house author’s pen name. Its author-partners are published under one of the four C.U.L.T. sub-imprints (Kids, Teens, Adult, Audiobiography) most fitting to their work.
